I have just started reading the book “Surely you are joking Mr. Feynman” and I was reminded of this guy(since he used to quote a lot of examples from life of "Sir" Feynman) who was my mentor for chemistry during my preparation for JEE, Mr. Ravi Gopinath . he is one of the few people I admire and have personally met..
(Sometimes I wonder why we don’t admire, care people when they close to you or you are in contact with them and when they are memories or the contact is lost people keep wondering those days and lamenting and longing to meet again…….this all is nowhere fitting with what I’m going to write further, yet I miss the company of the genius and my mentor)
In the following text I’ll be trying to bring out the best I could remember of my teaching days with this philosopher, scientist, teacher , T.V. person….multifaceted human character and that is why I admire him the most…jack of all trade and master of'em too!!!!!
He used to take our tuition classes at his mother-in-law’s flat!!!!!!! This might sound bizarre but this is how it is…..and this is just the beginning..this person was real cool. Our classes used to take place around a dining table with 6-8 people surrounding "their" sir while the next batch waited silently in the drawing room at aunty’s place (sir’s mum in law). Classes were fun, in our batch,we were initially 8,out of which 5 had completed schooling, including me and 3 were still in school, 12th grade, although 2 people later left thinking sir’s theory and his way of teaching was not even worth a crap, I was on similar thinking lane but continued clinging to his lectures to get more of “crap”.
Sir was real fan of cricket and it's masters the Gavaskar, the Tendulkar , the Sarfaraz Nawaz, theWarne and some other legendaries. I should have mentioned this before, it was during my first encounter with him,I realized the fact that sir is cricketing fan, he used examples of legends quite frequently.
I first met him on my birthday, to get enrolled for his classes and there came the lecture and long one in which he tried to explain me that IIT was not my piece of cake if I haven’t done the job of being crystal clear with concepts of chemistry or any other subject for that matter, during my school days. The example he gave was.."you might be the master at your street level cricket or even at step higher level but you cant outplay Mr. Warney buddy!!!! You’ll get out on the very first ball………" in this example the player was me and JEE played role of Mr. Warne. After chopping off my hopes on my birthday and looking at my dull grown face he said my idea was not to discourage you but to make you aware of the reality, if you are still interested, you are most welcome.
So I joined his “tuition center” which neva existed….the very first lecture was on basic chemistry and he emphasized on removing "the crap" ,the INDIAN AUTHORS have filled our minds with. He asked everyone which book they referred, out came the popular Indian publishers the pradeep, the ABC, comprehensives and many other crap, and he smiled after every publisher’s name(INDIAN) was called…the smile was telling “ fella!! I was looking for this answer..now i’ve something to nail you down..ha ha ha”..So that was our first class.
His lecture on atomic theory was the one that exhibited his talent in giving lectures.. chapter which everybody thinks to be simple enough to learn just by flip of page, this person made it look simply damn difficult!!!!! The example he used was “think of yourself being blindfolded and trying to poke a football hanging via rope in a dark room” and then something else(while explaining Heisenberg uncertainty principle)..which every one thought that they got his point ….but then came the limitation which I fail to remember but everybody was mesmerized and we all looked at each other as if we've witnessed some brilliant magic show….his examples were awesome and I cant tell the joy I’m feeling by reliving those moments through this writing.
He later showed book that he wrote in 1992 on chemistry and launched in the market but had to pull it out for low sales…alas, he said these students don’t want content they want kilos, I’ll explain what he meant, the price of any supplementary book was around 400-500 Rs. (I don’t know how much they cost now) and most of them weighed close to 2-3 kilos and the book authored by sir priced the same but was just 250 gms or even less with just 100 pages!!!!!! So the fraternities favored kilos over content and also institutes that claim to prepare students for JEE used his book for their study material illegally, so he decided to pull books out of market. It was through this book where introduction to author was written i got to know abt his qualificationsàsir was a grad from IIT, went to Princeton univ. worked for T.I.F.R. ,did Mass Comm. from Jamia, part of technical team of the science show Turning point,(my fav when it used to be aired,I was in 3rd -4 th standard then) and many other I’m failing to recollect.OMG…..i said then, when I read this and I am saying now when I’m typing this….so many things done successfully…and earning each of that is as hard as trying to make an elephant wear an underpant !!!!(he he he) { it might be unbelivable for many, but sir was no fake, not a con man for sure}…..the year in which he joined priceton he was only person chosen from India for that course and just 6 other all around the world!!!!!!!!OMG again and Mass Comm. from Jamia which is best in whole of ASIA so imagine the competition!!! And this person had it all…….how did I forget graduating from IIT…toughest undergrad exam in the world and then TIFR,normal people don’t (cant) do all this.
THis page has already grown too large in content(just the intro) than I inteneded to write about him........but this is allure of genius, what to do??
This person Is great,I regret I didn’t utilize his teaching well but reliving past is just so much fun!!!
Thank you sir!!!!!

abhishek,
this is the best piece i have read from you, and this is really marvellous. u have now mastered the art of words, grammar and ur overall diction. though it was very lengthy, but this is written in such a way that readers will be glued till the very end. nevertheless, mr. gopinath seems to have such an aura, his education, motivation, etc. that one feels to read the complete bit.
great piece... keep writing more... :)
Abhishek,
I was also taught by him and your bolf brought back great memories..any idea of where he is these days ?

hello sir,
im also his student at iit study circle.
your article was a pleasure to read and i agree with all words u wrote.
but i think we are like some "old computers" and he is like a new "heavy software".we may not be compatible with his way of teaching of teaching so thats why i agree with my friend sumit to some extent that it may be a gamble.
please write more about ur experiences with ur and our most respected and favourite teacher.

i agree with all my classmates fully becoz there are only few men like him RG
I have to start with an Oh-my God!
I just happened to come across one of his 'Alchemy' test papers that I took when I was taught by him and all the memories come back. Majeed Sir telling me about him, going to his place with my father, etc. So, I opened my laptop and googled him and here I am!
Mr. Gopinath is an exceptional teacher. The way he taught Chemistry(Organic specially) made a subject meant to be learnt by rote my favourite. I remember that I used to go to his home and he used to teach me for as much time as I wanted in his balcony in the later stages of my preparation. He is an exceptional person.
Today, every time I cross his house, I look for his red Fiat Uno.
P.S. I know his style of teaching is unique and seems odd to start with, having gone through that phase, but trust me, you guys are lucky to have him teach you. Although, I can't say I'm not surprised to know that he's teaching at a coaching center.
Can anyone of you please send me his contact number, here or on my mail id.
I would really appreciate it.
Thanks.
Mr Gopinath is very unwell. Cancer oesophagus. you could get in touch with him at his wife's number: 09891439379 her name is manisha

ravi gopinath sir is no more...he left us last night...
do u have the name of the book that ravi sir authored?
hi............thanks for writing this piece about my dad.............i appreciate it.im sorry to tell you that he passed away last night(28th july 2010)please write some more
Dr. Gopinath taught me Chemistry for a few months before the JEE - 2005 and the classes would be explosive, to say the least. Since I was reviewing most of the material, he had to made sure I unlearn my knowledge of Chemistry and re-learn it in the proper fashion.
Stubborn to put in the extra effort, he had to come up with innovative ways to convince me. These included prepared tests and long discussions on sample problems. Inevitably I would be found wanting and he would simply smile sheepishly. I must confess that I did trouble him many a times with these nuances of mine.
I did not meet him after 2005, but cherish the memories of the Sir. The first words that come to my mind thinking about him, tutoring in the dimly lit room, with the white board above his head is 'Class personified'.
May he rest in peace. Thank you sir.
Hi, i was aloso taught by Gopinath sir wen i was in 11th (i'm studyin in 12th now)..
I regret that i never bothered to studyin his class eventhough he used to teach us really well..
7-8 students across 1 dining table in his mother in law's house..
there is a dog which used to bark all the time while sir was teaching us in a "fundoo" way..
i'l miss him n his teaching style..:(
plz read this... seems to be the same person...

hi guys, its really heartening to see so many fans of ravi sir here... i want to relate to you all a small incident which brings out the human side of sir . and this one is especially for you pragya, since u have asked to comment about your dad...
... i was attending his classes in 1999...i had paid one third of the fee...and suddenly when the time for 2nd installment arrived, i could not arrange the money...so i left the tuition without telling him anything... i thought he would not care much...but to my astonishment he almost "hunted" me down :) and took me in his car to GK-2 near savtri cinema and asked what was the problem...when i explained that my family finances are not looking in good shape and i dont have guts to ask them for money, he advised me to start working citing his own example of how he did it at USA... he could have waived my fee , but he wanted me to earn my life hard , to take the difficulties of life head on , for he told me that he believed that it does not matter what u get in the end, what matters is did you get it the right way and above all by overcoming all the obstacles with equanimity...
...lesson was well learnt sir. you will always remain in my prayers and my " miss you" list...thanks for everything...
PS: he eventually waived my fees...
I was one of the lucky ones to attend his last class on the 28th of july. His way of teaching made jee preperation so easy. His last classes were more motivational than academic. I still remember his last class which he took laying on his bed. It was only because of him i managed to clear jee though not with a great rank which would have been guaranteed with his presence. Thank you sir...
I am an old student of Gopinath Sir. I regret I did not contact him after I went into an Engg. college.
I salute you Sir. Without you I would not have understood whatever (little) Chemistry I needed to understand. And I did not need to read Morrison & Boyd, your notes were so thorough.
The good that people do lives on long after they have passed on. I had thought of finding you many times, but it kept slipping my mind.
Thank you Sir. The Lord has transferred you to some other place to educate/motivate the next generation of engineers.

Gopinath Sir had the most profound impact on me and my life..he is the reason why i am about to embark upon my PhD in chemistry.
My condolences to his family, to his students...and all those who knew him and loved him.
In memory of him, his quaint red car, his blue booklet (Alchemy),his generosity( loaned out 'Surely you're joking, MR. Feynman' to atleast a dozen students every year), his passion for chemistry and above all, his willingness to share everything he had.
I have never known a better teacher and only a few other human beings are wonderful as him.
It grieves me deeply that he walks amongst us no more....but walk amongst the greatest , he did.
I don't have words for him..NO WORDS CAN DESCRIBE HIM!!! It was something to feel.Just beyond imagination!!
I don't have words for him..NO WORDS CAN DESCRIBE HIM!!! It was something to feel.Just beyond imagination!!
Was a student in 2005-2006.One of the greatest persons and mentor i have met.Changed the way i looked at the art called- 'studying' and life both. Much has been said about him here to which i need to add anything. My condolences to his friends, students and family.
P.S- Whenever in delhi, i am still compelled to go past his house,as i did in my pre engg days and pay a silent salute. He never knew it then, maybe now he can see that.
I am looking for Mr. Ravi Gopinath, Chemistry Teacher, DPS R.K.Puram 1985 onwards ..... Genius,Tall, Slim, unkempt hair, peculiar walk with forward bend, loving figure ..... Chapter on CH4 Methane would never be complete without the story of Canaries of Coal Mines !!! ....... If he is the same person you have written about, please do respond back with some news about him. Have been looking for him since ages ! Thanks and Regards, Shaleen, New Delhi
Hi Shaleen,
This is the same Ravi Gopinath who the post has been written about.
One of the few incredibly talented teachers who's pedagogy went way beyond his peers. I met him during the nineties and even though my association with him was not very prolonged, he had a deep impact on how I looked at science in general. Shocking to hear that he passed over 5 years ago. May he rest in peace wherever!
Things have really moved on , I always wondered about meeting him whenever I was back home or passed around CR Park. I dont know if its true or not , whether he passed away (I don't want to believe it). Well I will just give a call on that number posted above.
He is something else. Reading this blog rekindles my memories of him and old days.
I am Rohit. I was his student during 2009-2010 when I was preparing for the JEE exam. Now, I am pursuing PhD in the US. He was an exceptional teacher. He changed the perspective of forceful studying to joyful understanding of the subject: "Understand the fundamentals, read from best books/source (analogous to learning cricket from sachin tendulkar), let the understanding happen, enjoy the process and enjoy studying". Because of him I read the brillant feynman lectures on physics and also got interested into quantum theory: "about particle and wave duality" (in the middle of jee preparation...hehe lol). I started enjoying studies from heart and started getting a 'feel' of the subject matter. I cannot describe how much change and calmness I got after studying from him. Let me narrate three incidents which I can vaguely remember:
1. It was Delhi's beautiful winter at its peak and a student came late to his class. When sir asked the student why he is late? The student replied that because of the fog he got late as he came by riding a scooter. Sir replied "if you know there will a fog then you must start early in advance".
2. I was in a dilemma about which college to join for engineering and so I called sir to consult him. He said simply "you will be one who will study... it is only you who have to decide".
3. In a class one student asked sir: How should a student study...or some question like it. I cannot exactly recollect it but sir jokingly reminded ..."I have not opened a Sanskar channel". The whole class exploded into laughter and then came his advice...some which I tried to write down and so below is the interpretation of my 10 years younger self without any edits still alive on a decaying notebook page of the year 2009 (Please excuse the english...) which I wanted to share with everybody. It is as below:
Studying is a process of learning new and new things regularly. It is very
enjoyable process. It is not limited to a book / material but is a never
ending process. There is no shortcut for studying. It takes month/ years to
understand the subject you are studying. You should focus firstly, solely on
the reading of best textbook possible of the world. You should enjoy
learning. You should feel like learning. Real learning occurs when you
focus on the present situation, don’t pollute it with future. Studying your
mind should be calm, composed and confident. You should feel like
studying enjoying it. Remove anxiety. The process of studying means
getting more and more excellence on your subject; you cannot attain
perfection in anything, perfection is a disease. Nothing in the universe is
perfect. Nothing can be perfected. There is always a scope for more
betterment of something. You should try to learn your subject again and
again not making things happen forcibly. You should allow the things to
happen. Do not worry of the time barrier while understanding your
subject. It is not how fast you learn the subject but how fine you learn it.
You should learn in depth as clear as possible. first you should focus on
what you should be learning presently without thinking of anything else;
then after it try to revise the past topics and revise like that everything that
you have done in the past is available to you. All the things that you have
done till now is available to you. Enjoy studying, should not take stress.
Those people who says that stress is needed to achieve fineness in
something are false, fools. Best things are achieved when your mind is
cool/ calm/ composed. You enjoy feel like studying.
For each individual exposed to best teachers/ books. Is not a great scholar.
The personal thinking of an individual also matters. The individual should
be aware of the irrelevant things that he should not be doing at the present
moment. He should know why he is behaving right now. He should be
able to judge his inside feelings; monitor them.
If you are anxious then first recognize the factors causing it; then it would
be sorted out by itself.
This was when he was teaching in Kalu sarai, IIT study circle.
Please shoot me a reply at rohitsahu129@gmail.com , if you want to get in touch and may be share some of teachings of Gopi sir! I always wish I could have talked/interacted more with him! Please share more about his teachings!!!
The student who came late in the post was me..hehe!!
And the guy on whose question sir replied, I haven't opened a Sanskaar Channel", is one of fewest researcher in India who is working with world's best minds of his domain. Thanks to Gopinath Sir and his guidance from scratch!
There are lot of things I can say about my mentor Dr. Ravi Gopinath.
Most of what I remember is his unique way of teaching and looking at things with a different perspective. He was a teacher in every sense and taught me how to learn the right way.
I will always remember his mother in law flat and our small class room.
One of the examples I remember ( and also smile when I think back) is that how he compared a mule that is neither a donkey nor a horse, but is both to explain the properties of light that is both and particle and wave. It was funny and educational at the same time :)
I also remember him telling us when talking about Heisenberg's Uncertainity Principle, not to think in terms of pictures and images when it comes to quantum level because we cannot imagine the weird nature of quantum particles.
It was amazing to listen to him and talk about life and other things apart from chemistry.
Big a Feynman fan myself I could see Dr. Richard Feynman's image in Ravi sir.
What an exceptional guy, what an amazing personality.
If there is some parallel universe then I am sure he is exploring that with a smile on his face.
God bless him.
Cheers
Prankur
